SCHOOL MAGAZINE 1996
ITS TERRIFIC TO TRY
This year we produced our fifth School Magazine and it contained a page of written work from each child at the school.
Some of the happenings at Hope Valley Primary School in 1996 were:
- Gold won the faction athletics carnival for the second year in a row. The result depended on the last event of the day.
- The old toilet block was replaced with a flash, new model.
- The old gardeners shed and sport shed were replaced with an attractive colourbond shed.
- An admin block with reception, registrars office and Principals office was erected.
- Work started on converting the old office into a computer room.
- Automation of the library is well under way.
- Internet access and research using CD technology began in the library.
- Eight children took part in the Maths Olympiad.
- Clarinet lessons commenced at the school with five children from Year Six taking part.
- We won our first ever shield at the interschool athletics carnival which was held on a cold, windy day at Karragullen.
- Everyone from Pre-Primary to Year Seven took part in swimming lessons at Kwinana.
- We all visited Pioneer Village during W.A. Week.
- The outside of the school was painted over the October holidays. It looks great now.
- Children from the Year 6/7 class helped develop gardens around the new office and toilets.
- We had a tennis coaching session which led to tennis being one of our Friday sports options.
- Twelve of our students took part in the District Science Challenge and won a prize.
- Three Year Seven students joined maths extension classes at Kwinana Senior High School and completed the Westpac Maths Test.
- Six children were part of the Education Week day of tabloids at Kwinana Senior High School.
- Our Year Seven students had three science lessons at Kwinana Senior High School as part of their transition science.
- Constable Atkins worked through a new course of study with our Year Seven students and took the four best performers abseiling.
- Year Three children were invited to the school camp for the first time. The camp is to be in Busselton.
- We were entertained by Mark Cain and several classes made the musical instruments he had used.
- Our priority for the year was Written Language.
- We raised hundreds of dollars for the MS Society through the MS Readathon.
- Two well-supported Book Fairs earned points to buy valuable books for our library.
- Visiting coaches conducted football, basketball and baseball clinics.
- Projector screens were hung in the three senior rooms.
- Our school went on to the school security system.
- The Year 4-7 children visited the Alcoa mine at Jarrahdale.
- Several of our children wrote to members of the Australian Olympic team which competed in Atlanta.
- We had a fun school swimming carnival and took part in the Kwinana Interschool Swimming Carnival.
- Six Year 6 students attended a leadership course run by members of the Scout Association.
- A new bore (water, not teacher) was fitted.
